What is the Drug & Alcohol course? Is it the same as TLSAE?
The drug and alcohol course is also known as the Florida TLSAE (Traffic Law and Substance Abuse course). It’s the state-mandated Florida drivers education program that all teens must complete in order to earn a Florida learners permit. It teaches you the essential topics associated with safe and responsible driving, along with the dangers of abusing drugs and alcohol.
Who can take this course?
- ● You are a first-time driver license applicant at least 14 1/2 years old
- ● You are under 21 years old and need to reinstate your license after a DUI suspension.
Are there any additional fees when taking this course?
If you purchased the Florida TLSAE Course + Online Permit Test Combo, then you won’t need to purchase anything else from I Drive Safely*. If you did not purchase the bundle, you can purchase the Florida Online Permit Test from I Drive Safely, or if you’d prefer you can opt to take it at the DHSMV when you go to get your permit.
Any other fees you may pay to I Drive Safely are entirely optional - for example, expedited shipping, or correcting information to your course completion.
At the DHSMV, they charge:

- ● $10 per knowledge exam retake
- ● $20 per driving test retake
* You must take your permit exam at the DHSMV if you are 18 or older, of you you have already attempted and failed the permit exam three times online, even if the attempts were with a different provider.
Is I Drive Safely’s Florida Drug & Alcohol course state approved?
I Drive Safely’s Florida TLSAE online course is fully approved by the Florida DHSMV to satisfy the state requirement for the first time driver TLSAE drug and alcohol course. Be aware the DHSMV is also referred to as the Florida DMV or FLHSMV. The Florida drug and alcohol course provides all of the information you are required to know before you finally get on the road. The course meets the state-mandated 4 hours to help you earn your driving permit quickly and easily. Note that in order to complete your Florida drivers ed online, you must be at least 15 years old.

How does I Drive Safely’s Florida Drug & Alcohol course work?
The requirements for getting a Florida drivers license for ages 16 and up include completing a Florida drug and alcohol course and passing a written driving exam. The Florida TLSAE Drug and Alcohol course is a state-mandated 4 hours long. The online course and test may only be taken by students between the ages of 15 and 17. You can take either course at your own pace. Once you’ve passed the final exam, you can apply for your Florida learners permit.
